Challenging Day for Technology & Communications Sector

In afternoon trading on Friday, the Technology & Communications stocks have taken a hit, showing a 1.0% loss. Notable players like Broadcom Inc (AVGO) and NVIDIA Corp (NVDA) have been flagged as the day’s laggards, boasting losses of 6.3% and 5.3% respectively. Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK), a significant ETF in this realm, is down 1.3% today but maintains a robust 7.90% increase year-to-date. Within the ETF, AVGO has seen an 18.08% rise year-to-date, while NVDA boasts an impressive 77.14% uptick. Together, these two juggernauts account for about 13.7% of XLK’s holdings.

Materials Sector Facing Downturn

On the flip side, the Materials sector is showing a 0.5% loss, with key players like Albemarle Corp. (ALB) and Howmet Aerospace Inc (HWM) witnessing losses of 3.6% and 2.7% respectively. Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB) is down 0.4% in midday trading but has managed to stay afloat with a 4.64% gain on a year-to-date basis. While ALB has taken a hit with an 18.13% decline year-to-date, HWM continues to buck the trend with a 24.78% rise. ALB constitutes about 1.4% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
